National Landscape Conservation System

All Bureau of Land Management Wilderness areas, Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, National Conservation Areas, national monuments, National Scenic and Historic Trails, forest reserves, cooperative management and protection areas, National Recreation Areas, and Outstanding Natural Areas are part of National Landscape Conservation System, a relatively new system established by BLM to manage ts most treasured landscapes. See The Wilderness Society, State of the National Landscape Conservation System: A First Assessment Some of NLCS units are located in the Sagebrush Sea. Unfortunately, harmful land uses are permitted to continue in many NLCS units, including livestock grazing and off-road vehicle use.

The NLCS suffers from a lack of resources and protection from damaging activities, causing the National Trust for Historic Preservation to list the entire system as one of the nation's 11 Most Endangered Places. The new president of Republicans for Environmental Protection has called for increased funding and political support for the system.
